Abstract

The subject is a general introduction to the education of students with diverse abilities. Specifically, it explores and examines historical and current educational practices related to diverse learners. Preservice teachers will develop knowledge and skills that will allow them to identify and respond to individual educational needs. The subject also provides Preservice teachers with an insight into contemporary debates about educational diversity including political and philosophical issues related to segregation and integration, mainstreaming, normalisation, and inclusion.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- demonstrate an awareness of the issues related to the inclusion of students with diverse needs in education programs;
- describe current definitions, policies and practices, integration and inclusion in education in Australia;
- demonstrate, using appropriate language, an awareness of the diversity of adolescents with special needs and knowledge of the educational programming requirements;
- describe the most commonly used techniques in the assessment of young people with diverse needs and how referrals are made to relevant services;
- show an understanding of the professional sensitivities and support that should be given to the families of young people with identified needs, particularly with regard to parent communication;
- demonstrate knowledge of a range of strategies that would support inclusive education practice in the school education;
- define the Individual Educational Program (IEP) and describe how it can be incorporated into the overall structure of a general education program; and,
- demonstrate an awareness of the various techniques in behaviour management and ways to develop and enhance positive social interaction in a mainstream setting.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- sources of knowledge which inform the debate around inclusive education - knowledge of learning theories and philosophies related to best practice in the education of adolescents with diverse abilities - understanding the notion of inclusion and its practical manifestation in educational settings - identifying learner needs and designing interesting and challenging learning experiences with reference to current curriculum documents - intelligence - what is it? - academic success - exceptionality - stereotypes and side effects - language and meaning - acceptance and friendship - pathways for exceptional people - medical reasons and responses for exceptionality - ethical dimensions of intervention.
