ESS407 Understanding Literacy Problems (8)
Abstract| This subject has been designed to develop and increase student awareness and knowledge of reading development and literacy problems experienced by children. This subject has an emphasis on 'hands-on' approach to dealing with children who have literacy difficulties. Literacy in this topic will include reading, writing and oral components and students will be introduced to reading theory and language development in children. Assessment procedures will be examined as well as various teaching strategies and approaches to deal with difficulties children may have with reading, writing and communication. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- articulate a basic understanding of reading development in children;
- demonstrate an understanding of theories of language development;
- demonstrate a basic understanding of written language development in children;
- demonstrate an awareness of the causes and correlates of writing difficulties;
- design programs in reading and writing that will assist children with reading and writing difficulties;
- apply a range of assessment tools to identify reading, writing and communication difficulties; and
- implement a program with a child with literacy difficulties. |

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Language development an overview including four theories of language development and phonemic awareness.
- Reading and writing theories, approaches and difficulties including factors affecting reading competency and the acquisition of written language skills.
- Assessment diagnosis and intervention for reading and writing difficulties including specific strategies for prevention and early intervention.
- Development of consultation and collaboration skills. |
