ETH204 Ethics for Creative Industries (8)

Abstract

This subject aims to acquaint students with ethical issues in relation to practice in creative industries. Students will be introduced to key ethical concepts through case studies relevant to creative practice, and will then apply these concepts to a range of relevant scenarios as well as to their own practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
be able to demonstrate an understanding of the foundations of ethical thinking;
be able to identify potential ethical conflicts in their own projects at the proposal stage;
be able to actively contribute to the resolution of ethical issues which may arise in their practice;
be able to respond effectively to questions from funding bodies, clients and other commissioning bodies regarding the ethical dimensions of their work; and
be able to confidently participate in ethics clearance procedures, in particular the processes relating to CSU Human Research Ethics.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Introduction to key ethical concepts and contexts - Human ethics: vulnerable subjects (case studies used may include children, people with disabilities, people in developing countries, and so on) - Human ethics: ethical issues arising in the creative process of representation of 'real life' (both one's own life and the lives of others)

- Non-human and environmental ethics (including consideration of the use of animals in creative industries) - Ethics processes at CSU (primarily directed toward student preparation for their major project during third-year studies)
