ETH404 Ethical Issues in Correctional Management (8)

Abstract

This subject will begin with a critical evaluation of a variety of ethical perspectives regarding the nature and role of correctional institutions. Students will then consider a number of specific ethical issues confronted by correctional managers.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to understand and evaluate a variety of ethical perspectives regarding the nature and role of correctional institutions.
- be able to develop a critical awareness of the manner in which ethical principles might be observed or violated in specific situations within correctional contexts.
- be able to perform a philosophical analysis and evaluation of certain ethical issues relating to correctional administration.
have developed the practical reasoning skills required to deal with ethical questions in correctional settings.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Analysis and evaluation of a variety of ethical perspectives, regarding the nature and role of correctional institutions. - Philosophical background and introduction to United Nation protocols, United Nation Standard Minimum Rules, and the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights. - Specific ethical issues relating to the practice of correctional administration: for example, issues relating to over-crowding, solitary confinement, the sexual abuse or assault of inmates, racial discrimination, the treatment of mentally ill prisoners, the use of violence, aggression or degradation by correctional officers, management strategies to reduce stress amongst inmates and officers, and so on.
