FIN526 Managing Commodity Prices (8)

Abstract

With the escalating volatility of market prices and the resulting impact of business revenue, the need for agribusineses to manage price risk is becoming crucial to the sustainability of the agribusiness.  This is an applied subject that will allow students to develop skills in the management of commodity price, and exchange rate risk. Students will develop marketing strategies and utilise different management approaches through a simulation based on real life prices that change as the underlying market and seasonal conditions change.

Given the specific nature of the subject content an understanding of key agricultural crop and livestock seasonal production cycles is assumed.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of international and domestic agricultural commodity, exchange rate and capital markets; - be able to decsribe the interaction between price and production and how this can impact business revenue;  - be able to evaluate the forces within these markets and assess their likely impact on the agribusiness; - be able to implement a range of price management strategies that satisfy price objectives; - be able to utilise various price management tools available to price managers that protect producers from the volatility of price movements;  - be able to demonstrate an understanding of the linkages between the various capital markets.
