GER501 Contemporary Issues in Gerontology (8)

Abstract

This subject explores a range of contemporary issues of significance to healthy ageing, for example: impacts of and planning for the ageing population; identity and ageing in place; ageing and climate change; indigenous experiences of ageing in Australia; gender aspects of ageing and aged care. An alternative contemporary topic of relevance to student may be chosen in negotiation with subject coordinator. Students will research their topic and critically analyse the representations of this issue in the public domain, including within news and current affairs commentary, entertainment media, in government policy, in gerontological literature and research and within expert and public debate. Themes underlying the examination of the chosen topic include how issues are represented in contemporary debate, rights, anti-discriminatory practice and advocacy. Assessments enable practice of skills including high level critical analysis, advocacy and formal report writing.
