Abstract

The range of communities has expanded far beyond the notion of locality. Community development is therefore a complex and challenging endeavour. This subject expands definitions of community, increases student capacity for analysis, action, response and evaluation of developmental activities in various communities of place and space from village to cyberspace.

Enrolment restrictions

Students enrolled in Master of Human Services Practice or Master of Social Work or students who meet the prerequisite requirements.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to define and specify the identity of a given community
- be able to describe and apply appropriate theoretical models and frameworks of community development to communities of different types
- be able to analyse existing structures and interactions in communities
- be able to identify power relationships and processes of decision-making
- be able to plan and engage in processes of community development that build community capacity and are sustainable
- be able to examine and use existing networks and assist communities to develop new bonds and links
- be able to demonstrate appropriate use of technology including computer and internet tools
- be able to seek and successfully gain appropriate resource allocation for community development activities
- be able to ethically manage and demonstrate administrative best practice in community development activities
- be able to produce accurate and inspirational documentation and material so that other communities can learn and build on the outcomes of this work

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
Defining the new communities; Research and analytical tools for community development; Power and analysing networks and levels of influence and control; The role of beliefs and culture within communities: respect and challenge; Working with people in varous roles: volunteers, citizens, technocrats, politicians including people in business, education, health and environment; Economics and community development; Idealism and pragmatism; Social Entrepreneurialism; Social capital, community capacity building; Trust, cooperation and shared futures; Administrative best practice or gaining and managing resources with integrity accountability and competence; Effective models of action for change at micro through to global levels; Tools and techniques for information creation, exchange and broadcasting: Internet, publishing tools, radio, television etc
