Abstract

The subject examines international variations in the changing nature of work organisation. Following an overview of key historical developments and theoretical issues, the subject examines changes in the nature of production regimes, global variations in employment and labour market systems, variations in the influence of technical change on skills and the nature of work. It also includes the impact of the state, as well as globalisation and multinationals, on work organisation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to identify the nature of work and work organisation, including an international perspective, and to formulate an overview of the history of the development of work;
- be able to outline the main theoretical approaches that have been developed to explain international work organisation;
- be able to appraise the concept of production regimes, including the key characteristics of Fordist and post-Fordist regimes, the neo-Fordist critique of post-Fordism, as well as the international differences in production regimes;
- be able to identify the impact on employment systems of factors such as variations in individual countries in demographic change, school leaving age, retirement age, part-time and casual work, as well as taxation and welfare arrangements;
- be able to demonstrate the link between technological change and the need to develop new skills in work organisations, as well as demonstrate the impact of technological change on the nature of work and work organisation;
- be able to explain the impact of the state on work and work organisations, including its impact on labour market regulation and on women's employment;
- be able to assess the impact of globalisation and multinationals on work organisation.
