Abstract

Students completing this subject will have the capacity to identify and justify an appropriate approach to research design. They will be introduced to the principles of research methodology as relevant to the sciences. The subject considers concepts in both qualitative and quantitative research design and includes basic statistical concepts and methods, and the critical appraisal of literature in science.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify the key steps in research planning;
  • have gained approval for the proposed research topic;
  • be able to prepare and review the relevant literature on the selected research topic;
  • be able to develop a defence for a selected research topic;
  • be able to propose and justify a methodological approach
  • be able to identify and utilise material relevant to a research activity;
  • be able to prepare a basic research proposal;
  • be able to identify the key ethical/OH&S considerations in research;
  • be able to prepare and submit an application for human/animal ethical approval to an Institutional Ethics Committee.
