Abstract

This subject is a study of horticultural principles and activities as practised and how they span fundamental concepts of the biological and physical sciences, art and design, common sense and social responsibility

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
? use a range of generic skills required for successful tertiary study in horticulture
? understand the scope of horticulture
? develop competency in both horticultural and scientific plant classification
? have an appreciation of the function and role of the plants' environment (including the greenhouse environment) in relation to plant growth and issues of plant selection
? understand the range of uses of plants in the landscape
? describe the principles of minimising water use in the landscape
? understand the main issues of arboriculture as it relates to tree management
? understand the principles and processes of production horticulture, including horticultural production systems and crops and plant propagation
? appreciate the relative advantages and disadvantages of plant improvement
methods;

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
The plant environment (light, water, soil and other growing media, temperature, climate, greenhouses) The role of cultivated plants Plant classification Plant structure Plants in the landscape landscaping principles, arboriculture, water use in the landscape, environmental horticulture Production horticulture (horticultural sectors, horticultural crops, plant propagation and production, plant improvement)

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school.
