INF209 Describing and Analysing Information Resources (8)

Abstract

This subject introduces students to the principles and practices of describing and analysing information resources in information agencies and related contexts. It uses metadata standards to illustrate the basic principles which underlie effective information organisation practice. Examples are drawn from a range of information environments, including but not limited to libraries, and from a variety of information carriers. The organisation of electronic resources is particularly noted.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- show that they appreciate the centrality of effective organisation of information resources for successful information retrieval;
- demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between information retrieval systems and the description and analysis of information resources;
- show that they understand the relationship between the needs of different user groups and the information retrieval systems that best serve these needs; and
- be able to apply metadata standards and schema to a wide range of information resources.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Cataloguing - Metadata - Standards (including data communications) - Web 2.0 - folksonomies, tag clouds - Wide range of standards including archives and records
