Abstract

This subject provides a detailed introduction to the major practices necessary to establish an effective and efficient record keeping and archiving environment.  The subject looks at the technical, managerial and policy infrastructure necessary to ensure an effective records and archives service is built and maintained.  Topics covered include recordkeeping metadata, appraisal tools and approaches, disposal practices, technology and record keeping systems long term preservation, finally reviewing the evolving approach to access engendered by the move to an open, digital environment.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate a coherent and broad understanding of the technological and organisational aspects of record keeping and archiving infrastructure and systems;
  • to be able apply critical thinking, problem solving and technical skills and knowledge of appropriate practices and procedures for capturing both analogue and digital records;
  • to be able to review and synthesise knowledge of the issues, standards and processes involved in describing records and archives;
  • be able to demonstrate critical understanding of various approaches to appraisal and disposal;
  • be able to communicate clearly and effectively knowledge of appropriate policies and standards for the long term preservation of both analogue and digital collections; and
  • be able to comminicate clearly and coherently to an audience knowledge of the provision of access to archives in the digital environment.
