INF504 Research Literature & Project Planning (16)
Abstract|
Students will develop their understanding of research in Information Studies through reviewing research reports and other relevant literature. Students will identify an area of interest, select and then study in-depth the literature, which will guide the development of a researchable topic and research questions or hypotheses for a small-scale project. Through the literature, students will develop their understanding of research problems and the methodologies and methods that are used to guide research and inform project design. The literature review will establish the parameters for student’s research and researchable question(s)/hypotheses to be explored in a small-scale research project in INF544. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate specialised knowledge of the complex contexts within which research in information studies is undertaken with a focus on one particular area for their literature review;
- be able to critically analyse, reflect upon and synthesise information, problems, concepts, methodologies and theories in order to develop understand of an area of the discipline that will inform their review of relevant literature, enable topic refinement, and contribute towards the methodological background needed for proposal development in INF543 and the research project in INF544;
- be able to interpret and transmit knowledge in order to communicate a specific purpose and a clear set of objectives which will guide the writing of their literature review and initial project planning;
- be able to autonomously keep a record of their search strategies, literature identified, and initial project planning ideas; and
- be able to exercise expert judgement in order to select, evaluate and synthesise appropriate literature for their chosen topic area and develop this into a review, which explores the issues in depth and with balance.

- Steps in the preparation and writing of a literature review
