Abstract

This subject builds on earlier information organisation subjects, providing students with a more in-depth study of information retrieval, including techniques, developments and problems. The subject aims to provide students with a theoretical framework on which to build their practical understanding, and to alert students to the nature of changes and to research in the area, encourage them to evaluate and be critical of existing systems, and provide them with the base knowledge with which to analyse, evaluate or contribute to the development of systems for organising and retrieving information. (Assumed knowledge for this subject is equivalent to that found in INF425 Describing & Analysing Information Resources)

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an advanced knowledge of the principles of information retrieval ;
  • be able to reflect critically on existing methods of information retrieval and apply this to a variety of contexts;
  • be able to communicate effectively developments in the ways information professionals access information resourcesto a variety of audiences ;and
  • be able to apply critical thinking and judgment to plan and develop inhouse information retrieval resources autonomously.
