ISL481 Islamic History I: Biography (Sirah) of Prophet Muhammad (8)

Abstract

This subject discusses the life of the Prophet Muhammad, together with his character, personality, and common misconceptions about his life and work. Various aspects of his life including pre-Islamic Arabia, early life before prophethood, the Meccan period, migration to Medina, social, diplomatic and military challenges, Islam’s domination of Arabia, the family life of the Prophet, his spirituality, his reported miracles, social transformations during his lifetime, and dynamics that were to shape human history will also be addressed.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to articulate the state of pre-Islamic Arabia
  • be able to demonstrate understanding of the main events in the life of the Prophet Muhammad and the unfolding of a Muslim community
  • be able to analyse the social transformations during his lifetime and their impact on the Muslim world today
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the family life and spiritual aspects of the Prophet Muhammad
  • be able to recognise and evaluate common misconceptions about the Prophet Muhammad
  • be able to demonstrate independent research, organisation, written and oral communication skills through the presentation of a substantial work

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Arabia before Islam and the birth of Muhammad
  • His life before prophethood
  • Beginning of prophethood and first Muslims
  • Propagation of Islam in Mecca and persecution of Muslims
  • Economic and social sanctions towards Muslims
  • Hijrah (migration) to Medina and its historic significance
  • Social reforms and marriages of the Prophet
  • The Battles of Badr, Uhud and the Trench
  • Treaty of Hudaybiya and the spread of Islam in Arabia
  • Conquest of Mecca and repercussions
  • Year of deputations, Tabuk expedition
  • Farewell pilgrimage and the passing of the Prophet

Residential School

This subject contains a optional 2 day residential school. Residential school is optional. The purpose of the residential school is to provide an opportunity for exploration of the coursework covered. In addition to content review, this part of the course aims to facilitate an interactive session between the teaching academics and students. Students will also be expected to present on a chosen topic during the residential school.
