ITC215 Modelling and Decision Support (8)

Abstract

This subject provides a practical introduction to the theory and practice of decision support systems for use in management, research or design decision making. Major topics include modelling, prediction, optimisation, problem solving, visualisation and the analysis of large data sets.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to apply the basic principles, paradigms and methods of modelling;
- be able to locate, access and use large data set available on-line;
- be able to identify and use appropriate software for the analysis of large data sets;
- be able to apply basic mathematical functions to analyse large data sets;
- be able to interpret the results from data analysis conducted; and
- be able to extrapolate the knowledge gained to real life situations.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Modelling principles,
- Research methods
- Data and Software Resources ( including use of 3GL or 4GL software applications)
- Major classes of problems - Visualization - principles, graphical methods, data reduction
- Problem-solving
- Use of scripts and macros
- Case studies
