Abstract

This subject introduces students to the rapidly expanding field of multimedia and its ability to improve the quality of presentation and communication of information in electronic publications.  It will explore the online systems and technologies that are readily available whilst considering issues surrounding the design and implementation of such systems. Students will engage with various forms of digital media and explore their application.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify and reflect on the key components of multimedia technologies including text, graphics, voice, video and animation;
  • be able to define the role of multimedia technologies in the online and web environment;
  • be able to list the characteristics of each media type and describe their application;
  • be able to develop, edit and improve interactive web pages that incorporate a variety of digital media such as graphics, voice, animation and video;
  • be able to discuss the implications of copyright in the use of multimedia;
  • be able to identify and differentiate the protocols, standards and representation techniques used for storage and transmission of multimedia information.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Multimedia standards, data types and their applications.
  • Multimedia authoring and production.
  • Data storage and retrieval methods.
  • Compression methods.
  • Integrating multimedia into online environments.
  • Case studies from the real world.
