Abstract

This subject provides an understanding of computer networks and data communications. It includes the network technology and standards underlying the applications and the computer network systems that support them. Underlying technologies for network design and management, network security, telecommunication systems are covered. Studentswill explore the latest trends in data communications and network technologies.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to define and explain terminology of data communications and computing networks;
  • be able to investigate communication processes inlayered architectures;
  • be able to describe and demonstrate data and signal conversion and illustrate modulation techniques;
  • be able to identify, describe and apply different communication media for complex scenarios;
  • be able to describe and differentiate between communication types, standards and multiplexing techniques and justify their use;
  • be able to explain and compute error detection and correction using appropriate techniques;
  • be able to describe and demonstrate different Internet protocols and services;
  • be able to contrast and critically evaluate different network topologies and describe network security.
