ITC501 Strategic Information Management (8)

Abstract

This subject aims to examine how information systems can be used to achieve a company's strategic objectives. After first considering business strategic planning, the tools and techniques of analysis are examined. The need for information systems strategic planning is analysed within the modern environment of industry and commerce. Alignment and optimisation of technology investment is made achievable by the creation of continued improvement procedures.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to discuss and apply the processes that can be used in the integration of IT and organisational strategies;
  • be able to apply the IT governance concepts and management practices that can be used to successfully manage, source and deliver strategic IT products and services;
  • be able to analyse and select appropriate innovative information technologies that can be used to strategically transform organisations;
  • be able to evaluate an organisation's strategic IT management processes; and create procedural knowledge documentation for continued improvement recommendations.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Strategic business planning, mission statements, SWOT.
  • Integrating information technology and business strategy.
  • Obtaining competitive advantage from information technology.
  • Portfolio analysis.
  • Strategic information systems, planning for technological change.
  • Opportunism in planning.
  • Concepts related to the study of modern organisations including the role of information; human dimensions such as management and culture; and change management.
  • A range of information systems and their application in commerce and industry.
