ITC534 Computing Research Preparation (16)

Abstract

This subject allows students to develop research skills necessary for a research higher degree in computing. The subject will cover areas such as critical reading skills, literature review, selecting and evaluating a variety of sources of information, academic writing, identifying a computing research problem, writing a research proposal, and formulating a hypothesis. By the end of the subject students should be able to formulate good research questions in a computing discipline.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* be able to identify the role of research in a computing discipline area;
 * be able to demonstrate understanding of philosophical assumptions and different underpinning research approaches and strategies;
 * be able to select and evaluate a variety of sources of information in a computing discipline area;
 * be able to analyse, summarise and synthesise academic literature;
 * be able to identify a computing research problem and formulate a reasonable hypothesis; and
 * be able to demonstrate academic writing skills in preparing a research proposal.

The subject will cover the following topics:
* Introduction to research
* Ethics Issues in IT/Computing research
* Academic reading and writing skills development in the context of Computing research  
* Introduction to planning and designing a research project
* Literature review in a chosen area  
* Bibliographical Styles in Computing discipline
* Research paradigms
