Abstract

The major aim of this subject is to give the students the skills and knowledge required to complete the A+ Service Technician industry certification examination developed by the Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA).

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
be able to describe PC support industry job roles;
be able to manage Windows using command line tools and edit the registry;
be able to use remote tools to deploy, maintain, optimise, and troubleshoot systems;
be able to use tools to recover or restore a damaged installation;
be able to configure and troubleshoot local network and wireless connections;
be able to configure and manage users, groups, and shared resources;
be able to configure and secure internet connections and web browser software;
be able to perform preventative maintenance using approved tools and products;
be able to assemble, disassemble, and upgrade PC and notebook components;
be able to configure and update BIOS/CMOS;
be able to troubleshoot, optimise, and upgrade hardware;
be able to troubleshoot and maintain printers and scanners;
be able to demonstrate good communication skills.

* The fundamental principles of using printers and scanners
* Install, configure, optimise and upgrade printers and scanners
* Tools and diagnostic procedures to troubleshoot printers and scanners
* Preventive maintenance of printers and scanners
* Install, configure, optimise and upgrade networks
* Tools and diagnostic procedures to troubleshoot network problems
* Preventive maintenance of networks including securing and protecting network
* The fundamentals and principles of security
* Diagnostic procedures and troubleshooting techniques for security
* Potential hazards and proper safety procedures including power supply related issues
* Communicating with customers and colleagues
