JRN204 Broadcast Journalism 2 (8)

Abstract

This subject continues students' practical involvement with the news output of the Community Broadcast Association of Australia's National Radio News Network and local news and current affairs for 2MCE-FM, to hone their newswriting and radio production skills. Students also study television news and radio, current affairs and documentary production. Students further examine the cultural contexts of broadcast news and current affairs reporting.

Enrolment restrictions

Fourth session in the Bachelor of Arts (Communication - Journalism) course for students majoring in Broadcast Journalism, and fourth session in the Bachelor of Sport Studies/Bachelor of Arts (Communication - Journalism) double degree course for students majoring in Broadcast Journalism.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate proficiency in more complex broadcast news and current affairs reporting;
- be able to demonstrate an ability to produce broadcast-quality short radio documentaries;
- be able to apply the principles of specialist broadcast journalist rounds reporters;
- be able to demonstrate an appreciation of the multi-cultural environment of Australia and its impact on broadcast journalists;
- be able to demonstrate proficiency in the practical aspects of TV news production;
- be able to demonstrate inter-personal and personal presentation skills relevant to broadcast journalism (interviewing, editorial conferencing, on-air presentation);
- be able to demonstrate the competency to script a TV news item with vision;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of, and apply, media law and basic ethical practice.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- advanced radio news and current affairs reporting techniques; - local government reporting; - court reporting; - radio documentary, production and presentation; - 'voice' work; - the role of the specialist rounds reporter; - community journalism; - TV news production; - issues of 'sensitivity' and reporting; - media law and basic professional ethics.
