Abstract|
This subject will provide students with a comprehensive study of issues relating to sex and gender in the criminal justice system. Students will engage with key theories of feminism, postmodernity, critical criminology, intersectionality, power and queer theory. Concepts of gender, sexuality, masculinity and femininity will be critically analysed. Relationships between gender, law, sexuality, policing, policy, politics, crime and media will be explored. These relationships will be examined through topics such as discrimination, harassment, pornography, sex work, trafficking, abortion, sexual violence, domestic violence, workplace rights, and security. |

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Introduction to sex and crime: concepts of masculinity and femininity, sexuality, refresher on feminist theory; Topics such as: Discrimination: anti discrimination legislation, limits and potentials of legislation to address discrimination, workplace rights; Intersectionality: vulnerability, race, class and gender; LGBTI: rights and the law, LGBTI and policing, identity, sexuality, transgenderism and the law; Harassment: sexual harassment, gender and the workplace; Gender and the body: abortion, family planning, consent, identity politics; Sex crimes: sexual violence, incest; Trafficking; Sex work; Power and gender: critical theory, security, control; Domestic violence: policing, power, media will be covered.
