Abstract

This subject provides information on the history and contemporary issues relating to Islam, Muslims, and law enforcement.

The subject gives a background of Islam in the world, together with an understanding of the religion, and an overview of Islamic practices. This foundation is then developed and expanded by drawing on contemporary issues surrounding Islam, including their possible and perceived impacts on law enforcement, including current and emerging community issues. Future directions of Islam and relationships with authority are also canvassed.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Be able to understand the main aspects of the history and growth of Islam
Be able to describe the core beliefs and practices of Islam
Be able to understand factors impacting on the relationships between Islam, Muslims, and authority, and the subsequent impact on law enforcement.
Be able to identify and describe the contemporary issues impacting on Islam and Muslims, including their impact on society, and particularly law enforcement.
Be able to have an understanding of the possible future directions of Islam and the perceived effects on law enforcement.

1. General Islam as faith tradition

History and growth of Islam and Muhammad
Modern history & revivalist movements
Beliefs and practices of Islam

2. Contemporary issues and policing

Religion and culture – Responses to modernity and globalisation
Islam in modern society – Shariah law and ethics
Islam in politics – Authority, secularism and democracy
Women in Islam
Jihad and terrorism

3. Modernity and Islam in the context of policing

Muslims as minorities – Migration and refugees
Islam in the everyday life of Muslim minorities
What Muslims think of Western authorities

4. Aspects of Islam in the western community. 5. Future of Islam

Islam and future directions

This subject includes assessment by way of two core assessments. The first assessment is a written essay. The second assessment item will involve a further written assignment, or assessment whilst in attendance at the optional subject residential.

Residential School

This subject contains a optional 2 day residential school. The purpose of the residential school is to provide an opportunity for exploration of the coursework covered and assessment of student learning. In addition to content review, this part of the course aims to facilitate an interactive session between the teaching academics, students, and sections of the Islamic community.
