- be able to apply and further investigate the history of literary criticism; - be able to analyse some of the positions and approaches in the contemporary critical debate; - understand some of the cultural and critical impacts of these modes of discourse; and - be able to consider the implications of these theories for the teaching of literature. |

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics: 1. "Traditional" literary criticism - Plato, Aristotle, Sidney
2. Neo-Classical and Romantic Critics - Matthew Arnold ...T.S.Eliot;
3. "Contemporary" literary theory - Russian formalism, Marxist critics, structuralist theories, post-structuralism, phenomenology and reception theory, feminist criticism. |
