MGI514 Project Management Leadership (8)

Abstract

This subject focuses on the leadership skills, knowledge and understanding required to deliver successful projects as the head of the project team. The typical and common challenges that threaten projects are explored in detail and participants learn how to predict, avoid and deal with these challenges for positive outcomes. Team leadership and management techniques are compared and analysed as well as techniques to handle common interpersonal challenges. The core project processes are explored in overview and particular focus is applied to risk, quality and communications. Students will learn how to effectively engage stakeholders and maintain positive support for their project whilst avoiding or overcoming typical obstacles to success.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to differentiate between leadership and management and reflect on their effects on a project team's success;
  • be able to predict and critically analyse interpersonal challenges and apply appropriate resolution techniques;
  • be able to investigate the business case of a project and devise a stakeholder buy-in and alignment strategy;
  • be able to predict and critically analyse the typical and likely challenges of the core project processes (scope, schedule, cost, quality);
  • be able to devise and apply preventative and corrective techniques to the typical challenges in core project processes;
  • be able to identify and predict likely sources of project risk and to devise mitigation and avoidance strategies for them; and
  • be able to design comprehensive project communication plans.
