Abstract

This subject introduces the student to the Asia Pacific region and its integral role in the world economy. It attempts to define the region and to describe and analyse its political, cultural and commercial characteristics relative to the rest of the world. The subject will profile some of the leading players in the region in terms of geographical, historical, cultural, political and economic criteria, emphasising those various features and interactions deemed to be of commercial significance.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to identify and explain the roles that politics and economics play in trade and social relationships with the nations in the Asia Pacific region;
- be able to explain how the four tigers or newly industrialising countries (NICs) actually achieved their economic transformation;
- be able to assess the future of the Australian economy in the Asian region;
- be able to explain the various economic links, alliances and tensions within the region;
- be able to assess the future for the Asian nations and the second generation of NICs;
- be able to ascertain who are likely to be the key players in the region by the year 2015;
- be able to explain why this century will be dubbed the Pacific Century.
