MGT517 Advanced Research Methods (8)

Abstract

This subject will develop not only specific skills required for conducting alternative approaches to qualitative data collection and analysis, but also develop multivariate data analysis skills, such as multiple regression, multiple discriminant analysis, canonical correlation, structural equation modelling and cluster analysis. The student will develop competence in the use of SPSS for these various analytical approaches. Assumed knowledge for this subject is equivalent to that covered in HRM507 or ACC540 or the completion of a basic research methodology subject at undergraduate level such as MKT230 Market Research.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
be competent in designing, conducting and analysing qualitative research projects using a variety of qualitative research techniques
understand how to select appropriate multivariate analysis techniques for specific research questions
be able to use SPSS for a variety of multivariate analysis techniques.
appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.
assesses the validity of research reports in the context of the methodology used

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
A review of qualitative research techniques including the use of laddering ; techniques, unstructured questionnaires and focus groups Analytical procedures for evaluating qualitative research data, including interpretation of underlying themes and software packages such as Nudist. Multivariate research techniques such as multiple regression, multiple discriminant analysis, canonical correlation, structural equation modelling, and cluster analysis. Using SPSS on the UNIX and/or PC in a variety of multivariate applications.
