MIN451 Ministry Professional Practice (8)

Abstract

This subject introduces students to critical reflection on their own experience of being a Religious Practitioner in their chosen field of specialisation. The student will engage in critical analysis and reflection on their own strengths and growth points evident from their approved ministry placement with a suitably qualified external supervisor. Through the presentation and discussion of case studies, journaling, and interaction with their supervisor the student will develop and refine their practical expertise in their chosen field of specialisation, and apply that expertise to new and complex ministry situations.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to demonstrate a high order of skill in analysis of their strengths and growth areas as a Religious Practitioner in their chosen field
- be able to evaluate critically the role and purpose of supervision in ministry and reflect on their own progress as a supervisee
- be able to demonstrate independent thought in the presentation of case studies for supervision and discussion
- be able to demonstrate creativity and flexibility in the application of advanced knowledge and skills to new and complex ministry situations, and
- be able to demonstrate a high order of skill in the analysis and critical evaluation of aspects of their placement experience.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
Students will participate in a placement in which they undertake a minimum of ten hours per week ministry in their chosen field of specialisation. Students are required to find their own placement with the approval of the Subject Coordinator. The placement may be within their own work environment. They are also required to have a minimum of 10 hours supervision for their ministry placement over the course of the semester with an external supervisor approved by the Subject Coordinator. The practical nature of this subject requires critical reflection on the ministry completed during the placement. Students will be provided with a programme of readings, questions and exercises for reflection which will assist their learning during the course of their placement. These will include: - Critical analysis and self-reflection on the integration of theory, knowledge and skills within the person of the Religious Practitioner - Being a supervisee in a ministry placement . learning how to learn . how to give and receive feedback . realistic self-evaluation . how to reflect . emotional awareness and how to dialogue - Supervision in ministry . developmental stages in supervision . approaches to supervision . roles and responsibilities in supervision . supervision groups . problems in the supervisory process - Utilisation of self-reflective skills in professional ministry practice and supervision - Professional Development . stages of personal growth . accessing continuing professional development.

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school. The residential will focus on the student as supervisee, including critical reflection on their professional ministry practice, case study presentations, analysis of the their progress, and reflections on aspects of the internship experience. The lecturer will provide expert supervision in a group setting for cases presented by students.
