NRS191 Primary Health Care Nursing 1: Health Promotion and Education (8)

Abstract

The Bachelor of Nursing curriculum is based on Primary Health Care as an organising framework. Students undertaking this subject will therefore develop a comprehensive understanding of primary health care principles and philosophy and its implications for nursing. Students will implement a collaborative health promotion/health education project that demonstrates application of the principles of primary health care throughout the lifespan.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1. be able to discuss concepts of health and differences in perceptions for children, adults, families and communities.
2. be able to discuss Primary Health Care philosophy and principles and apply the principles of primary health care in nursing practice.
3. be able to examine the concepts of social justice and equity in primary health care, and demonstrate cultural safety.
4. be able to discuss primary, secondary and tertiary prevention and health care contexts and implications for the nursing role.
5. be able to demonstrate an understanding of the principles that underpin the concepts of critical thinking and reflection and significance of these concepts to nursing.
6. to be able to demonstrate an understanding of the principles that underpin the concepts of planning, problem solving and decision making and significance of these concepts to nursing.
7. to be able to demonstrate understanding and application of the skills required to find evidence through research.
8. to be able to apply, with direction, the principles and concepts of primary health care to specific nursing contexts at a beginning level.
9. to be able to demonstrate an understanding of the roles and functions of the inter-professional health care team.
10. to be able to demonstrate an understanding and application at a beginning level of the principles of formal academic writing.
11. to be able to use technology to aid research and present information in a professional manner, consistent with organisational requirements.
12. to be able to demonstrate a fundamental understanding and application of the principles of effective group work.
