NRS192 Primary Health Care Nursing 2: Fundamentals of Nursing Practice (8)

Abstract

Students undertaking this subject will develop the ability to apply primary health care principles while undertaking nursing practice in clinical settings. This subject will develop knowledge and skills necessary for: safe practice, therapeutic communication, clinical decision-making, assessment and screening throughout the lifespan. Students will also further develop their skills in providing culturally safe care and applying the principles of social justice and equity to primary health care contexts.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1. to be able to apply, with direction, the principles and concepts of primary health care specific to nursing contexts at a beginning level.
2. to be able to use reflective practice, critical thinking and evidence-based practice in clinical decision-making.
3. to be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary for nursing assessment and screening with children and adults.
4. to be able to demonstrate skills of therapeutic communication and needs assessment when working with children, adults, families and communities.
5. to be able to apply the principles of social justice, cultural safety and equity in primary health care.
6. to be able to explain the roles and functions of the inter-professional health care team.
7. to be able to identify the factors that underpin effective oral presentations and demonstrate, with direction, developing oral presentation skills.
8. to be able to understand the significance of documentation to safe nursing practice and demonstrate, with guidance, clear and accurate documentation in line with legal and ethical requirements in the primary health care setting.
9. to be able to demonstrate an understanding and application, at a beginning level, the principles of formal academic writing.
10. to be able to use technology to aid research and present information in a professional manner, consistent with organisational requirements.
11. to be able to demonstrate a basic level of proficiency in prerequisite mathematical calculations for medication administration.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
1. Operationalising Primary Health Care (a) Role of the nurse in communication and assessment in primary, secondary and tertiary health contexts (i) Needs assessment of children, adults, families and communities * Therapeutic communication and the nurse - client relationship with children, adults and families * Nursing history * Physical assessment of children and adults (eg. vital signs, oxygen saturation, level of consciousness, neurovascular observations) * Social assessment of children and adults (eg. lifestyle, intimate relationships, family relationships, support networks, occupation etc) * Cultural assessment of children and adults * Spiritual assessment of children and adults * Application of social justice and equity principles (b) Role of the nurse in promoting safe nursing practice and professionalism in primary, secondary and tertiary health contexts with children, adults, families and communities: (i) Scope of nursing practice (ii) Reflective practice and evidence based clinical reasoning (iii) Skill acquisition in secondary health care context * Basic life support * Activities of daily living * End of life care (c) Role of the nurse in promoting self and collegial care in primary, secondary and tertiary health contexts (i) Occupational health and safety (ii) Environmental safety (iii) Violence in the workplace (iv) Fire safety (v) Nurse as teacher/educator and nurse as leader 2.
