NRS223 Essential Nursing Care: Chronic and Complex Nursing (16)

Abstract

This subject will examine the complexity of chronic conditions, rehabilitation, habilitation, disability and palliative care. Integrating student learning, it will focus on the development of an holistic approach in the provision of safe and compassionate care to children, adolescents, adults and families across the lifespan who are living with a range of chronic and complex conditions and disabilities (for distance education students this will involve a 4 day residential school). This subject builds on previous subjects to build a body of knowledge which informs critical thinking, skill development and an ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team. Students will undertake an 80 hour workplace learning experience in this subject, which may be undertaken overseas.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to plan nursing care for patients with complex co-mordities demonstrating rationale for how one affects the other (aligns with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse: 2.6, 4.1, 5.1, 9.4).
be able to conduct a comprehensive and systematic nursing assessment of a patient with a co-morbidity (NMBA 1.2, 2.2, 2.3, 2.5, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 8.1).
be able to plan nursing care in consultation with individuals/groups, significant others and the interdisciplinary health care team in the clinical setting (NMBA 1.2, 2.2, 2.3, 2.5, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 8.2, 9.4).
be able to use clinical data to provide comprehensive, safe and effective evidence-based nursing care to achieve identified individual/group health outcomes (NMBA 1.2, 2.2, 2.3, 2.5, 2.6, 7.1, 7.4, 7.7, 9.3, 9.4, 9.5, 10.3).
be able to evaluate effectiveness of care provided to individuals/groups and/or significant others (NMBA 1.2, 2.2, 2.3, 2.5, 4.1, 7.4, 8.1, 8.2).

Module 4: Legal, ethical and cultural issues
Module 5: Rehabilitation
Module 6: Disability
Module 7: Health education for self management
Module 8: Palliation

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 4 day residential school. Tutorials and assessment of students through Clinical Skills Labs/Simulation.

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 10 days duration. Students will complete a workplace learning component in a setting focussing on chronic and complex nursing care to ensure that they have relevant skills and experience in this area.
