NRS279 Health Assessment and Physical Examination (8)

Abstract

In this subject students will develop the knowledge and skills required to undertake comprehensive health assessments of individuals across the life span. They will be introduced to a range of health assessment frameworks and will be required to integrate their understanding of normal physical and cognitive development. Students will be required to critically analyse and synthesise collected dated. At the completion of the subject students will be able to undertake and accurately document a comprehensive assessment.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to systematically undertake a comprehensive client history of individuals across the lifespan.
  • be able to demonstrate beginning level competencies in physical assessment.
  • be able to demonstrate appropriate interviewing and interpersonal skills for health assessment.
  • be able to understand the differences in normal physical and cognitive development across the lifespan.
  • be able to develop and utilise clinical reasoning skills to analyse and synthesise collected dated.
  • be able to document information accurately using an appropriate assessment framework and terminology.
  • be able to apply the principles of cultural safety to nursing practice with individuals and families when undertaking a health assessment.
  • be able to recognise and apply legal and ethical frameworks when undertaking and documenting a client’s health assessment.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Frameworks and techniques for comprehensive health assessment.
  • Analysis, problem solving and diagnostic decision making principles.
  • Communication skills in history taking, assessment, examination and dispersion of findings.
  • Retrieval, analysis and synthesis of collected data.
  • Lifespan, gender and cultural issues in health assessment.
  • Ethical and legal frameworks. Policies and protocols.
  • Legal and ethical frameworks for documenting a client’s health assessment.

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 2 day residential school. The residential school is compulsory as it forms a significant component of the teaching strategy in this subject. High fidelity simulation will be used to advance the students health assessment and physical examination experience.  Additional learning resources are provided at these schools that build on materials provides through their online learning modules such as case based learning activities. This is an ANMAC requirement for the assessment of competence
