NRS291 Health Challenges 1: Nursing Interventions and Rehabilitation (8)

Abstract

This subject builds on concepts of nursing in the primary and secondary health care environments studied in NRS192. The subject introduces students to a nursing orientation in caring for children and adults who have moderately severe health challenges. Students will apply critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care in primary and secondary health care settings using a holistic approach.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate the ability to provide nursing care within secondary health care environments;
- be able to demonstrate the ability to provide culturally safe nursing care for children and adults based on the concepts of social justice and equity in practice;
- be able to apply the principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for children and adults;
- be able to apply the skills of critical thinking and reflection within the context of nursing;
- be able to apply and evaluate evidence in nursing practice;
- be able to integrate and apply, with direction, knowledge, skills and principles for clinical reasoning in nursing practice for children and adults;
- be able to apply, under direction, the principles of interpersonal and therapeutic communication skills in the secondary health care setting for children and adults;
- be able to apply developing oral presentation skills within the context of clinical group discussions;
- be able to apply, under supervision, the principles of safe and accurate documentation in the secondary health care setting, in line with legal and ethical requirements;
- be able to demonstrate developing application of formal writing skills and evidence of critical thinking, in a variety of genres; and
- be able to demonstrate developing application of technology to aid research and present information in a manner, consistent with organisational requirements.

Nursing and the secondary health care environment (a) The secondary health care environment and secondary prevention (b) Health challenges and Nursing interventions for children and adults: (i) Musculoskeletal health challenges (ii) Integumentary health challenges (iii) Special sensory health challenges (iv) Respiratory health challenges (v) Cardiac health challenges (vi) Vascular health challenges (vii) Haematological health challenges 2. Operationalising secondary health care and prevention for children and adults (a) Safe nursing practice and professionalism (i) Practice within scope of practice (ii) Reflective practice and evidence based clinical reasoning (iii) Documentation and communication (iv) Skill acquisition in secondary health care context * Musculoskeletal assessment and intervention: Care of traction, perioperative care, wound management * Integumentary assessment and intervention: Wound management, burn assessment and management * Special sensory assessment and intervention: Vision and hearing assessment * Respiratory assessment and intervention: Airway management, mechanical ventilation, care of chronic obstructive airways disease * Cardiac assessment and intervention: Acute myocardial infarction care, coronary artery disease care, perioperative care, basic and advanced life support, intravenous therapy (peripheral), medication administration * Vascular assessment and intervention: Peripheral vascular assessment, amputation management, emboli assessment and management, complex wound care * Haematological assessment and interventions: Blood transfusion, management of haematological disorders * Pain management 3.
