NRS292 Health Challenges 2: Nursing Interventions and Rehabilitation (8)

Abstract

This subject continues to build on concepts of nursing in the primary and secondary health care environments, with increasing complexity. The subject introduces students to a nursing orientation in caring for children and adults who have moderately severe health challenges. Students will apply critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patients in primary and secondary health care settings using a holistic approach.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
1. Nursing and the secondary health care environment (a) The secondary health care environment and secondary prevention (b) Nursing interventions across the lifespan in the following contexts: (i) Gastrointestinal health challenges (ii) Endocrine health challenges (iii) Renal/urinary health challenges (iv) Immunological health challenges (v) Reproductive health challenges (vi) Neurological health challenges 2. Operationalising secondary health care and prevention (a) Safe nursing practice and professionalism for children and adults (i) Practice within scope of practice (ii) Reflective practice and evidence based clinical reasoning (iii) Documentation and communication (iv) Skill acquisition in secondary health care context * Gastrointestinal assessment and intervention: Therapeutic diets, enteral feeding (nasogastric/gastrostomy), intravenous therapy (peripheral/central), TPN, colostomy care * Endocrine assessment and intervention: Therapeutic diets, medication administration, blood glucose measurement and management * Renal/urinary assessment and intervention: Urinary assessment and intervention, managing incontinence, urinary catheterisation, peritoneal dialysis, haemodialysis * Immunological assessment and interventions: Medication administration, education related to condition and wellness * Reproductive assessment and intervention: Education regarding self examination, perioperative care, wound management * Neurological assessment and intervention: Seizure management, cerebrovascular accident care, closed head injury, pre, peri and post-op care 3. Residential School
