NRS376 Health Optimisation 2: Mental Health Nursing (8)

Abstract

The aim of the subject is to prepare the student to nurse children and adults with mental illness in primary, secondary and tertiary health care settings. Students will study the range of presentations of mental illness, in a variety of social and cultural settings. This subject will prepare students for nursing practice in institutional and community settings ranging through metropolitan and rural and remote areas. Application of knowledge and practice will be facilitated through placement in the context of an appropriate health care setting.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

1. be able to demonstrate knowledge of early intervention and health promotion strategies.
2. be able to critically evaluate the nursing assessment, intervention and evaluation of children and adults with mental illness.
3. be able to discuss and critically analyse current diagnostic schema such as DSMIV (TR) and ICD 10.
4. be able to evaluate the evidence base for a range of treatment options children and adults.
5. be able to discuss and critically analyse relevant mental health legislation and its significance in managing children and adults experiencing a mental illness.
6. be able to synthesise knowledge of legal and ethical issues in the nursing care of children and adults with mental illness.
7. be able to discuss the significance of the consumer/carer perspective children and adults.
8. be able to evaluate care priorities and options for a range of presentations and implement appropriate nursing care.
9. be able to apply and evaluate critical thinking and reflection in the context of nursing.
10. be able to apply and evaluate planning, problem solving and decision making in the context of nursing.
11. be able to apply and evaluate evidence for best practice in nursing.

(e) Motivational interviewing and working with carers
(f) Modes and types of treatment and care
(g) Management of challenging behaviour

2. In caring for children and adults who are experiencing a broad range of mental illnesses as outlined below, common themes addressed include:
(a) Models of causation

(f) Education for health optimisation

3. Nursing interventions and care of children and adults experiencing perceptual disorders:
(a) Types of delusion, thought disorder, passivity phenomena,

Residential School
