NRS527 Clinical Practice Profile in Indigenous Mental Health (16)

Abstract

This subject introduces the broad concepts of Indigenous mental health and associated clinical practices. It explores selected practice issues in Indigenous mental health in relation to the principles of care. It examines the roles and functions of nurses and other professionals working with Indigenous clients and offers ways forward to more culturally appropriate methods of care for Indigenous clients. This subject, therefore, enables the students to explore selected issues in clinical practice in depth and presents them with the opportunity to acquire such an insight. It is expected that the subject will stimulate the students to undertake their own study of practice issues that they are most interested in and which are relevant to their own professional practices.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

# Demonstrate understanding of how clinical education/practice is influenced by particular philosophical models;

# Be able to describe culturally appropriate methods of care for Indigenous clients;

# Be able to explore issues in Indigenous mental health in relation to the principles of care;

# Be able to undertake practical experiences to broaden understanding of and acquire skills for cultural appropriate care;

# Be able to develop clinical analytical ability in the field of Indigenous mental health;

# be able to construct a portfolio in the form of written papers and discussion documents, on an issue/issues of choice in clinical practice in the field of Indigenous mental health.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
models of mental health care for indigenous people; policies and strategies influencing the direction of clinical practice in the field of Indigenous mental health; Indigenous mental health and principles of care; culturally appropriate methods of care for Indigenous clients; influence of clinical education/practice by particular philosophical models; practical experiences to broaden understanding of and acquire skills for cultural appropriate care; portfolio of written papers and discussion documents, on an issue/issues of choice in clinical practice in Indigenous mental health
