NRS544 Cultural Competence in Indigenous Health Care: Implications for Nursing (8)

Abstract

The subject aims to develop the knowledge and skills of nurses to work effectively with Indigenous Australians to achieve significant improvements in contemporary Indigenous health. Students will be required to critically reflect upon the capacity of self and the profession to deliver culturally competent nursing practice. This will include analysis of contemporary health issues facing Indigenous Australians and the interrelationships between historical, social and political determinants of health. Students will focus on implications for nursing practice and will investigate best practice in culturally competent nursing practice in Indigenous health care.  Holistic health encompasses spirituality as well as the physical, social, and emotional wellbeing of the individual and community.

Assumed Knowledge

Satisfactory completion of undergraduate degree and professional nursing experience working with Indigenous Australians.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to analyse the interrelationships between the historical, cultural, social and political determinants of health and the contemporary health of Indigenous Australians.
  • be able to analyse the implications of Indigenous health issues for nursing practice, duty of care and delivery of health care services.
  • be able to critically reflect upon the profession and their own capacity to deliver culturally competent nursing practice to Indigenous Australians.
  • be able to investigate and develop, within nursing practice, culturally appropriate ways of engaging with and empowering Indigenous individuals, groups and communities.
