NRS549 Introduction to Child and Family Health Practice (8)

Abstract

This subject aims to explore with participants the role of the Child and Family Health Nurse in a variety of health and community based settings. Participants will examine and reflect on the core knowledge and skills of a Child and Family Health Nurse and develop an understanding of the professional practice framework for Child and Family Health Nurses. Legislation, policies, and theories that inform the practice of Child and Family Nurse will be critically examined. Students will focus on the implications for practice as a Child and Family Health Nurse working in partnership with families, communities and other professionals.

Students enrolled in the Master of Nursing and the Master of Clinical Nursing (Nurse Practitioner).

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to examine and discuss the scope of practice of the Child and Family Health Nurse in a primary healthcare model
  • be able to critically appraise the legislation, policies and guidelines that inform practice as a Child & Family Health Nurse
  • be able to identify and critically appraise the theories that underpin practice as a Child & Family Health Nurse
  • be able to design a health promotion program based on an early intervention, primary health care model in Child and Family Health
  • be able to discuss the importance of working in a culturally competent manner with children and families

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Module 1 - Legislation, Policy, and Guidelines: Legislation, Children and young persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998; NSW Health Policy, Supporting Families Early, Identifying and Responding to domestic violence; Guidelines, Keep them safe a shared approach to child wellbeing, Child Wellbeing & Child Protection, NSW Interagency Guidelines (2006)
  • Module 2: Professional Practice Framework for Child & Family Health Nursing; core knowledge and skills; reflective practice; clinical supervision; evidence based practice
  • Module 3: Theories that underpin practice; family partnership; attachment theory; cultural competence; child health and development
  • Module 4: Early Intervention and Primary Health Care Approach to C&FH, Primary Health Care in C&FH, Examine the different levels of care - Primary, Secondary and Tertiary in Child and Family Health Practice; Health promotion in C&FH, Immunisation: An overview, Safe sleeping, Shaken baby project; Working in partnership with families to strengthen capacity
