NRS554 Advanced Clinical Practicum (8)
Abstract|
This subject provides a 160 hour professional experience supervised by a prescribing Nurse Practitioner or Medical Practitioner (If no Nurse Practitioner is available). This prepares the student for the management of health for a nurse practitioner scope of practice, and includes wellness promotion, illness prevention and pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment. Emphasis is on utilisation of critical thinking and evidence-based practice to formulate differential diagnoses, clinical impressions, diagnoses, and treatment and evaluation plans. The focus is on management of general health and selected common health problems. The subject provides clinical opportunities to provide safe, legal, and ethical care within a designated scope of practice. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to accurately assess patients presenting with common health problems
- be able to develop differential diagnoses and problem list based on a holistic health assessment including medical and social history, presenting symptoms, physical findings, and diagnostic information
- be able to develop appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for a designated Nurse Practitioner scope of practice with emphasis on safety, cost, and efficacy
- be able to implement treatment plans for disease prevention, health promotion, and health problem management based on current research, evidence-based standards of care and practice guidelines for common health problems
- be able to evaluate the effectiveness of health promotion and disease treatment plans based on client outcomes
- be able to integrate legal and ethical principles into decision-making in the advanced nursing practice role
- be able to integrate cultural sensitivity into advanced practice nursing care
- be able to demonstrate effective professional oral and written communication skills
- be able to collaborate with the Professional Experience Supervisor and interdisciplinary health care team in facilitating the patient's progress toward maximum functional health

Work Place Learning| This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 20 days duration.
The professional experience will be undertaken under the supervision of a prescribing nurse practitioner or medical practitioner – 160 hours. This experience must allow the nurse to see patients under supervision, formulate differential diagnoses, treatment plans and present patient cases (in real time) to professional experience supervisors to obtain advice, guidance and confirmation. This experience is outside normal nursing working hours unless the nurse is in a NP transition role.
The student will discuss with the academic mentor the logistics of this professional experience. A professional experience supervisor will liaise with the academic mentor to explain professional experience supervision requirements, review the Professional Experience Supervisor Handbook and the objectives of the professional experience.
