NUT506 Applied Clinical Dietetic Practice 2 (16)

Abstract

This is a clinically based subject where upon completion students are required to demonstrate entry level competency in managing client centred nutrition care for individuals. Students will undertake two five week clinical placements under the supervision of an APD and or team of dietitians. They will be expected to undertake screening, assessment and identification and prioritisation of  those at nutritional risk, make appropriate nutrition diagnoses, prepare and implement nutrition care plans for achieving management goals in collaboration with the client or carer and other members of the health care team. Students will also demonstrate the use of client centred counselling skills to facilitate lifestyle change, monitor the progress of the individuals condition and care and adapt care plans as necessary. Students must demonstrate safe practice and reach entry level dietetic competency as assessed by the final placement supervising dietitian (APD). Students are also required to attend a compulsory five day residential school during the subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Be able to perform the duties required of an entry level dietitian in clinical practice including applying dietetic assessment, management and intervention principles and practices to common nutritional problems caused by a range of  disease states.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- effective performance in nutrition and dietetic practice
- communication in clinical and work based practice
- nutritional screening and assessment
- interpretation and analysis of assessment findings
- making appropriate nutritional diagnosis 
- client centred counselling skills to faciltate lifestyle change and supporting clients to self manage
- preparation, development, implementation and documentation of a nutritional care plan
monitoring of individuals condition and care and adapting plans as necessary
- evaluation of the effectiveness of nutrition interventions
effective management of a dietetic case load
- demonstration of cultural competence
- demonstration of safe practice
- demonstration of a professional, ethical and entrepreneurial approach advocating  excellence in nutrition and dietetic practice

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 5 day residential school. Opportunities for students to engage in client centred nutritional practice will be provided through a range of learning and teaching strategies, including tutorials and practice based activities, participation in the CSU Nutrition clinic, and guest lectures on various aspects of clinical dietetic practice.

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 50 days duration. This subject Applied Clinical Dietetic Practice 2, will be a demonstration of all of the clinical dietetic theory and practice as well as the clinical decision making, clinical reasoning and professional judgement as applied to a 10 week practicum to demonstrate entry level dietetic competency as defined by the professional body the DAA.
