OCC103 Communication for Occupational Therapy Practice (8)
Abstract
This subject develops written and oral communication skills with an emphasis on the language of health professions. Specific occupational therapy communication tasks and skills are addressed including interviewing skills, professional writing (wirtten reports), and communicating with a range of people from diverse backgrounds and situations, and people who may have communication difficulties,including those who may use assisted communication strategies and devices. A component of the subject includes 75 hours of supervised occupational therapy workplace learning. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to identify areas of strength in their communication skills;
- be able to identify areas for development and improvement of their communication skills;
- be able to develop strategies for developing and improving their communication skills;
- be able to identify and implement techniques for enhancing communication;
- be able to identify and implement techniques used in communicating with a broad range of people, including clients, families, and carers of clients, and other health professionals;
- be able to demonstrate a range of interviewing strategies, and develop a beginning understanding of counselling skills;
- be able to apply a range of strategies for delivering effective oral presentations and to writw a professional occupational therapy report with supervision.

Work Place LearningThis subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 10 days duration.
Students are required to do a two-week full-time workplace learning placement to practice their communication, professional behaviour, and self-management skills under the supervision of a practicing occupational therapist.
