OMT519 Research Review and Clinical Practicum in OMT (16)

Abstract

This is the final subject in the OMT course and is divided into two main areas. The first requires the student to research an area of interest and present this in a formal lecture setting. The second is the application of the principles learnt in the course in a supervised clinical situation. This will examine the students approach to assessment, diagnosis and treatment and their ability to incorporate clinical reasoning.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
to apply the principles of OMT in a clinical environment through an understanding of:
- the principles of the neuro-musculo-articular system.
- the principles and practice of manipulation
- the integration of joint function with other components of the neuro-musculo-articular system
- the interrelationships of the postural mechanisms.
- the current evidence-based research influencing and underpinning the OMT philosophy.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- The selection of a clinical research question in an area of musculoskeletal physiotherapy that is of interest to the student. - To search the current literature available on the topic with the intention of writing an annotated bibliography on at least twenty articles - To write up the findings of the literature review with the intention of delivering these findings in lecture format to members of staff and their peers - To reach a satisfactory level of competence through active participation in a supervised clinical placement(s) to a maximum of 240 hours, incorporating patient assessment, treatment, ongoing treatment planning, interaction with supervisory staff, other staff members and all necessary allied health staff deemed appropriate to the patients condition.
