Abstract

In this subject, students investigate the discipline of evidence based medicine and apply these principles to the paramedic domain. This subject also introduces and develops competence in diagnostic reasoning within the context of advanced paramedical practice. Emphasis is focused on the importance of utilising evidence based clinical decision-making in the field of paramedic and emergency care.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of evidence based practice in the prehospital care setting through analysis of different levels of evidence, analysis of the decision making process and evaluation of management procedures
- Articulate skills in clinical reasoning to clinical incidents and care plan development in the prehospital care environment, incorporating diagnosis, assessment, implementation and evaluation
- Evaluate the constraints imposed by prehospital care protocols and algorithms, and the role of clinical practice guidelines in the decision making process
- Demonstrate an ability to utilise practical, valid and reliable research to enhance learning and to demonstrate an appreciation for best practice in the prehospital care setting

The subject will cover the following topics:
The syllabus will cover the following topics: - principles of evidence based practice; - roles and hierarchies of evidence; - assessing the methodological quality of evidence; - clinical decision making; - models of reasoning; - logical fallacies; - critical incidents associated with the decision making process; - implementing evidence based findings; - documentation associated with clinical decision making in pre-hospital care; - evaluate the relevance of care plans to pre-hospital care; - critique current protocols, algorithms and clinical practice guidelines in relation to the process of making clinical decisions.
