PHS402 Preparation for Advanced Physiotherapy Practice (16)

Abstract

This subject will extend students' learning of physiotherapy practice from a level of competency in core areas of physiotherapy practice to a more integrated knowledge in more specialist areas of physiotherapy. Students will develop advanced knowledge and skills in cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal and neurological physiotherapy as well as in specialist topics including - but not limited to - spinal cord injury, lymphoedema, women's health, burns and occupational health. Students enrolling in this subject will be expected to have significant knowledge and clinical experience in the core areas of physiotherapy practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to identify learning needs with regard to additional levels of competency required to practice in specialist areas of physiotherapy practice;
  • Be able to integrate knowledge from core and specialist areas of physiotherapy practice to determine management approaches for clients, carers, families and communities with multiple and complex problems;
  • Be able to identify, evaluate and apply relevant information resources and evidence based practice to effectively manage complex clients;
  • Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the role of other health care professionals and identify possible referring bodies in the management of more complex clients;
  • Be able to operate within own role, responsbilities and limitations;
  • Be able to communicate effectively with colleagues and clients regarding more complex clients.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Advanced clinical reasoning skills in cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal and neurological physiotherapy
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Lymphoedema
  • Women's health
  • Burns
  • Occupational Health
  • Differing approaches to advanced manual therapies, including - but not limited to - HVTs, myofascial therapy and headache management
  • The role of all members of the healthcare team, government and non-government community organisations, in the management of complex clinical cases
  • Researching, evaluating and applying clinical evidence to the decision-making process

Specialised Resources

Outsourcing of external/specialist clinicians/business professionals. Higher lecturing rates may be required and travel, accommodation when requested/required.
