This foundation subject introduces students to the concepts of outdoor recreation and adventure tourism. Students will learn about the differences between leisure, recreation and tourism, and examine the history and role of outdoor recreation and adventure tourism in our culture. They will also examine the structure and organisation, and current demand and trends in outdoor recreation and adventure tourism. There is no residentials school associated with this subject. On completion students will have a broad understanding of the key concepts and theories related to outdoor recreation and adventure tourism.

• The tourism system, demand and supply factors, in relation to outdoor experiences
• Sectors within the tourism industry and the special context of adventure tourism;
• The history of outdoor and adventure tourism
• The growth and development of visitation to the natural environment and current  patterns and trends that have been established;
• The role of outdoor experiences at the individual that influence individual choice and overall demand and satisfaction in going outdoors;
• The role of government and the private sector in the providing these experiences and how they interact; and
• The implications of encouraging adventure tourism on society and the environment
