POL304 Issues in Australian Politics (8)

Abstract

An examination and analysis of a selected number of contemporary issues in the Australian political system. It includes constitutional reform, republicanism, citizenship and federalism; changes and trends in voting behaviour, party system, interest group corporatism, Parliament and in public policy. The politics of aboriginal land rights, the environment, immigration and Australia's relations with Asia. These issues are studied in the context of Australia's democratic and pluralist polity.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

. analyse and evaluate the issues of constitutional reform, republicanism, citizenship and federalism
. identify and examine current controversies and trends in selected Australian political processes, institutions and public policies
. critically examine and analyse the politics of aboriginal land rights, the environment, immigration and of Australian-Asian relations

The subject will cover the following topics:
.Constitutional reform and renewal. . Republicanism: citizenship and democracy. . Federalism: problems of the contemporary federal balance. . Political parties and party system: adaptation, change and reform . Voting behaviour and partisanship. . Interest group 'corporatism' and 'pluralism'. . Parliament: accountability and representation. . Public policy: new directions, economic rationalism, micro-economic reform, privatisation, trade liberalisation and impact of globalisation. . Environmental politics. . Politics of aboriginal land rights. . Immigration, multiculturalism and the politics of race. . Australia and Asia: human rights, regional security and trade.
