PPP124 Policing and Road Safety (8)

Abstract

Vehicle use on roads poses a significant safety risk to the general community, both other road-users and pedestrians. This subject examines the police role in reducing this risk and in dealing with the negative consequences of road use. Legislation, specific policing strategies, police/stakeholder relationships and investigation, all in relation to traffic-related matters, are addressed in this subject.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • explain the role and relationship of the police service to other key road safety stakeholders;
  • apply appropriate methods of enforcement to a variety of road safety related situations and offences;
  • identify ethical issues related to the use of discretion in relation to enforcement of legislation;
  • fully investigate a variety of incidents, including the completion of relevant records and documents;
  • fully investigate a collision, and complete all required paper-work;
  • complete statements and prepare briefs for submission to court;
  • explain the links between drug and alcohol use and road safety;
  • explain the NSW Police Safe Driving Policy, and
  • work effectively in teams and demonstrate the use of reflective practice to improve performance.

. road safety law enforcement, discretion & ethical decision-making
. collision investigation
. alcohol, drugs and driving
. serious driving offences
. NSW Police Safe Driver Policy
