PPP131 Ethical Practice & Decision Making 1 (8)
Abstract
This subject enables students to identify and respond professionally and appropriately to the moral dimensions of police work. It explores typical situations faced by general duties police with a view to clarifying the key values, principles and obligations (including the NSW Police Code of Conduct and Ethics) that should inform ethical decision making in those situations. It requires students to develop both sound decision making skills and proficiency in explaining the reasoning that underpins their ethical decisions. This Session 1 subject addresses this through introductions to key principles and some extension of these through ongoing application and justification of ethical decisions. This scaffolds students towards the Session 2 PPP136 Ethical Practice and Decision Making subject in which such decision making and justification is extended and deepened.

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to anticipate policing situations which potentially raise ethical issues
- be able to make sound moral judgements in relation to a range of specific situations faced by general duties police officers
- be able to explain the reasoning which informed those judgements and communicate such judgements to others in a sufficiently detailed manner
- be able to explain the NSW Police Code of Conduct and Ethics
- be able to apply NSW Police Code of Conduct and Ethics to their own professional conduct
- be able to explain the concept of police discretion within the investigation of common criminal and social problems confronting general duties police
- be able to identify ethical issues related to the use of discretion in relation to enforcement of legislation
- be able to demonstrate and explain the ethical and professional use of force
- be able to explain the notion of professional police work.
- be able to employ a variety of strategies to ensure personal ethical conduct
- be able to identify key professional issues in the police work environment
- be able to explain the importance of ethical officers to a professional police organisation
- be able to identify well being and mental health issues affecting police in the workplace
- be able to describe the key principles within each relevant (ADPP Session 1 ) subject
- be able to apply these key principles through ongoing integrated classroom and practical policing scenarios
- be able to improve performance through evaluation and critical reflection
