PSY531 Adult Mental Health (24)

Abstract

This subject will focus on the development of the theoretical and practical knowledge base required for practice as a clinical or forensic psychologist working with adult clients. The subject will include extensive use of case study material, required and recommended readings which are relevant to the case material, and on-line forum discussions. The knowledge base will cover such areas as the type of institution where the client is seen, accurate identification of presenting psychopathology, specialised areas of clinical and forensic assessment, formulating treatment for specific types of adult mental health problems, issues related to implementing certain types of treatment, and the specific ethical and professional issues which may arise in these contexts. This subject also includes the application of the acquired knowledge while undertaking supervised practice in an adult mental health setting.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* be able to prepare and undertake a full psychological assessment of an adult client
* develop a comprehensive formulation of the presenting problems for an adult client
* be able to develop and document a treatment plan for an adult client
* be able to implement psychological treatment intervention with an adult client, under supervision
* be able to monitor, evaluate, and report on the outcome of implemented treatments
* be aware of the system in which the client exists and the influences such a system can have on the client and the treating professional
* be aware of ethical and professional issues that may impact on interactions between a client and a professional in any clinical or forensic situation
* take a wide-ranging and integrated approach to a client and their issues
* be able to undertake the planning and carry through the action in finding solutions to a wide range of problems in the area of adult mental health

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
* Application of the inductive, hypothesis-testing, approach to professional psychological practice * Health and forensic administrative systems * Professional oral and written communication skills * Revision of descriptive psychopathology, which will include the phenomenology of psychological disorder, current nosology and categorical diagnostic classification systems (e.g., DSM-IV), and dimensional models of psychological disorder and problems * Clinical assessment procedures for some of the major types of adult mental health problems (anxiety disorders, mood disorders, disorders of substance-use and abuse, psychotic disorders, impulse-control disorders, and personality disorders) * Specific assessment procedures relevant in forensic settings (competency, dangerousness, malingering) * The range of theoretical orientations and treatment models applied to adult mental health problems * Choice of intervention based on evidence of efficacy, effectiveness, and client characteristics * Procedures for developing intervention plans for the above-named disorders through the integration of information gathered in assessment into a coherent individualised case formulation * Methods and procedures for monitoring treatment implementation, evaluating outcome, and reporting on treatment process and outcome
